I posted a scam email I got inviting me to an interview and asking me to call an 0706 number, i initially thought 0706 was just a mobile number but in fact it’s an expensive personal number that from a BT landline will cost 46p/min, from mobiles it will cost 66p/min upwards (and isn’t included in any inclusive minutes).
http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/files/2010/01/numbering.pdf – note it’s 0706 (personal number) not a mobile
In short it’s an expensive rip off number and is very hard to identify the actual recipient. Someone somewhere is making money on this, the termination or forwarding to a premium rate number is a rip off and UK people should be aware of the costs before they call. Ofcom decided to remove any warning message in 2008 (which is a shame), alas people will call 0706 number in innocence thinking it’s not going to cost lots of money.
For completeness, I’ve included some of the numbers linked to an interview scam email (my blog post has received attention as I made a point of flagging the email as a bogus scam).
Please complain to your telco provider if you do find yourself billed for any calls made to an 0706 number if you didn’t have any warning or indication of the costs involved. It’s not fair and the telco’s should be doing more to ensure that people are not being ripped off this way.
Numbers linked so far to the bogus interview email:
07064848750 / 07064848713 / 07064848714 / 07064848716 / 07064848719 / 07064848720 /07064848722 / 07064848723 (as it’s a range I expect to get news of 07064848724 , 07064848725 , 07064848726 etc) new one added – 07064848624
