0706 telephone numbers – quick update – bogus expensive scam! (interview email) – jenny wilson, charles brown browncharles364@yahoo.co.uk interview spam

I posted a scam email I got inviting me to an interview and asking me to call an 0706 number, i initially thought 0706 was just a mobile number but in fact it’s an expensive personal number that from a BT landline will cost 46p/min, from mobiles it will cost 66p/min upwards (and isn’t included in any inclusive minutes).

http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/files/2010/01/numbering.pdf – note it’s 0706 (personal number) not a mobile

In short it’s an expensive rip off number and is very hard to identify the actual recipient. Someone somewhere is making money on this, the termination or forwarding to a premium rate number is a rip off and UK people should be aware of the costs before they call. Ofcom decided to remove any warning message in 2008 (which is a shame), alas people will call 0706 number in innocence thinking it’s not going to cost lots of money.

For completeness, I’ve included some of the numbers linked to an interview scam email (my blog post has received attention as I made a point of flagging the email as a bogus scam).

Please complain to your telco provider if you do find yourself billed for any calls made to an 0706 number if you didn’t have any warning or indication of the costs involved. It’s not fair and the telco’s should be doing more to ensure that people are not being ripped off this way.

Numbers linked so far to the bogus interview email:

07064848750 / 07064848713 / 07064848714 / 07064848716 / 07064848719 / 07064848720 /07064848722 / 07064848723 (as it’s a range I expect to get news of 07064848724 , 07064848725 , 07064848726 etc) new one added – 07064848624
The email appears to come from browncharles364@yahoo.co.uk .. more numbers (same range being used) – 07064848735 , 07064848736 , 07064848737 , 07064848734 , 07064848733 , 07064848738

  1. Derek says:

I have also received this mail and luckily didnt call th enumber as it seemed bogus. as i’m actually seeking work and have signed up to numererous web sites I’d like to find out how the scum bags got hold of my details,

  2. samantha says:

I got an email this afternoon. And rang it with out thinking the number was 07064848718. Dont call this one as well

  3. Graeme reid says:

The scum bags get out details as these recruitment sites hand over our precious information to any one who pretends to be a potential employer!! Unbelievable – this will only end in their own demise; you cannot pass precious details around like this; there may be a data protection issue here? Guess I should have read the small print – OMG

    • admin says:

the scumbags pay for the access, so the jobsite / CV aggregation companies are happy. The telco’s are happy to route calls to expensive termination places (070, premium rate etc) so they’re happy. Some scumbag makes £££ in call revenue and the only people to suffer are the innocent people trying to find jobs making calls to what appears to be a mobile number.

  4. Allen says:

I just got duped as well. Thanks for the information that you guys have posted. I should have checked here first. It’s particularly annoying when we are real job seekers (I’m currently out of work and having to rely on the generosity of others) and get scammed like this. Like others, my e-mail was from browncharles364@yahoo.co.uk where the company call themselves “Team Recruit”. I got suspicious after 90 seconds when their outgoing message said “we have a large number of callers and you are in a queue.” Don’t fall for it!!

  5. steve says:

I called but it seemed to transfer to another phone, with it still ringing I hung up!
    hopefully will not be charged

    • Kate says:

I received the same email but figured it was a scam as there was no mention of which role I had applied for – in fact no detail at all. Googled the number and get presto, found this page. Good work!

      • Paul says:

Just had exactly the same experience as you Kate, thanks to this site I wasn’t caught out either !
        Thanks Guys.

        • Nick says:

I also looked at this site before ringing the number. Thanks for sharing the information.

I think they should be hung from a tall tree by their privates!

          Thanks.

  6. Lana says:

I don’t understand why people still bother with emails that come from some strange e-mail address with fake names from yahoo.com/yahoo.co.uk/gmail.com etc domains.

As Kate said, there is no mention of which role you’ve applied, or what’s the name of the company etc.

If it would be a real person, they would send an e-mail from their corporate email address with a link to their corporate website. Lately I get loads of this stupid emails and I can’t believe somebody still being tricked by it.

  7. Emma Walsh says:

I’ve had the same email this morning, and like everyone else who has posted a comment on here I am also looking for work, so finding out that this is a scam has really infuriated me. I’m a naturally suspicious person, so the hokey name of Charles Brown rang alarm bells for me. I put the phone number in my search engine and lo and behold, I find your post, so thanks for exposing this scam.

  8. Pete says:

Thanks for this, I am a genuine jobseeker and I got email from charlesbrown486@yahoo.co.uk asking me to call 07064848731 to arrange interview. As the email was in my junk mail I thought it may be suspicious so searched on internet and found that it was a scam. Cheers to all.

  9. Emma Walsh says:

Plus, I thought it a bit of a give away that Mr Brown (or whoever he is) clearly doesn’t put the level of attention into his email that you should expect from a prospective employer. But when you’re looking for work you’re not necessarily going to look into it in that much detail.
But thankfully, I’m now going to be on the alert for this kind of email.

  10. Felix Oscar says:

I am a middle-aged man looking for a job and have signed up with a number of reputable and well known agencies.
I received an email to call for an interview with Charles Brown. It was not junk (seemingly!) and I called 4 times from a mobile.
I finally decoded to check the 0706 part of the number and now see its a scam. Heartbreaking for anyone who is genuinely looking for work.
I have reported the number etc to necessary authorities.

  11. tony says:

I’ve also received the same email today, fortunately I didn’t ring, as the number looked odd. Charles Brown was again the sender. Just a case of being cautious I guess.

  12. dands says:

Sadly, I phoned the number 07064747727 twice! That e-mail was very suspicious but I am desperate to get a job so I tried to find out what it was. On the first call I waited and waited until the message said “please leave a message” but after the beep was not enough length for me to leave message to call me back. I would be more careful in the future.

  13. Angela says:

They are still happening…got one today asking me to phone 07064848737…just how many numbers has this fraudster got!!! Hope they catch him!1

  14. Trev says:

Just had this email like all of you.I think this will be put this in the hands of BBC Watchdog and see if this low life can be brought to justice….Just had a feeling it was a scam..No details of what I had applied for etc…How did I find out…just googled the number and hey presto!
    Well over to you Anne Robinson..This is the email;

    Hi

As a result your application, I would like to invite you to attend an interview.

You will have an interview with the department manager, Edie Wilson. The interview will last about 30 min.

Please bring three reference (If available), as well as a copy of your ID, e.g. Passport, Driving License to the interview.

Please contact me on 07064848735, in order to arrange an interview

We look forward to seeing you

    Best regards

    Charles Brown

    • Adam says:

      Hello!
The same mail I received today….suspicious for me. Thank God that I didn’t call….bloody scammers ….

      • Jennifer says:

This scam is still going on as I’ve had the email recently! As previously pointed out… the email just is too generic and non-personal to be genuine! Don’t call just ignore or delete :)

  15. Dan says:

like wise but I checked online first and found your warnings – thanks

  16. Adam says:

Hi I called this scam number to arrange an interview with a Jenny Wilson. I held on twice, first time for over 5 min and then 2 min. Really can’t afford this nonsense.

  17. paul says:

Wish id checked on line first, but with the ammount of job applications i sent out,all with my CV attached i fell for it. The email even named the person who would interview me(an Edie Wilson) and to bring along references, annoyed with myself because i dont normally fall for scams, the number i was told to ring was 07064848735,again it was Charles Brown, and via the recorded message the employment agency Hart Recruitment was mentioned.

  18. I also discovered this thread by entering the number in Google. It is easy to have an email and website that looks corporate – so you have to beware of those too. I have also known of scammers who set up limited companies with fake director names and a registered address that turns out to be an unoccupied flat. Most annoying is the free magazine found in jobcentres – that is full of scams and the jobcentre staff are powerless (eg pay to get on a courier register or to sell your car).

This is a genuine offer – if anyone thinks they can obtain new clients for me then I will pay commission. Have a look at my website rwtm.pro and let me know whether you are interested.

  19. richa says:

On 5 june i recvd a mail i tried dere no. response i was lucky nd den email d person mail bounced bak from yahoo saying dis email id does not exist it is spam … BEAWARE

    Charles Brown

  20. Barrie says:

Well guys Charles Brown is at it again, fortunately for me I used to work for a very large Telecom company and recognised the number as fake. My interview was to be with Eddie Wilson no doubt related to Jenny. Perhaps those of us who are looking for a job should advise the web based recruitment agencies what’s happening.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE FOR THE COMPUTER AND TELECOMS JOB SEEKERS There is a company offering contract work for people to become expert advisers, the problem is the website address is .co.uk but the servers are in the USA, there is NO DATA PROTECTION ACT in the USA so ALL your details become public knowledge, read the Terms & Conditions.

  21. Ash says:

Slow hand clap too for bt for creating premium rate numbers that look like mobile numbers. Obviously they must have realised this type of scheme would inevitably happen but, just like the scammers, all they care about is getting your money.

  22. Phil says:

I have just been caught out by this. Luckily when I tried the number 0706 4848 628 my mobile stated that it was no a recognised number. So I tried on the house phone and was held waiting for a couple of minutes. If I ever get an email invitation to a job interview now, I will be checking the telephone number first.

    • Jeff says:

I did the same but what you probably didn’t notice was that the ringing phone was actually a recording so you were paying for that too :(

  23. Colin says:

Sleazebag continues with job interview telephone scam – received email today from Charlie Brown –

Please contact me on 07064848632. I didn’t, standard process – dont recognise details, google it..
& found this page – thanks.

Pretty despicable, maybe next scam they will target the sick or elderly (people looking for work, generally low on income) target the weak. People like this should be caught quickly and dealt with severely.

  24. Emma Walsh says:

Charles Brown (or whatever their name is) clearly forgot that they tried to scam me a couple of weeks ago. I got exactly the same email today and it went straight to the trash.

  25. Emma Walsh says:

….Make that twice in one day! Just wish I could tell this person (or people) what they can do with their scam.

  26. Sara says:

I received the same email today asked me to call and arrange a 30 min email, and the telephone number was 0706 – not being familiar with either of the names I googled them for business information and thankfully found your warning!
    Much appreciated.
    Since spammed the contact!

  27. Suzie.raygada says:

I just received it too, luckily didn’t hold for very long as looked to see where the number was from as I have sent a number of applications through various agencies.

  28. Steve says:

received the same email myself earlier, luckily I spotted this straight away….beware everyone its a SCAM.

  29. Mal Thomas says:

Have received this e-mail twice now. Have sent a report of fraud to the police so I hope they terminate his line.

  30. Cecilia says:

Received exactly the same email myself today from ‘Charles’. Realised there was no job title for the interview and looked somewhat unprofessional so copied the tel number and found this page. Thank goodness I did. Disgusting that most people being scammed here have no income, are looking for work and there’s still some scumbag looking to make a quick buck out of it.

  31. Anisha says:

I am currently in search of a job and have signed up to some job-sites. I received an email yesterday from charlesbrown486@yahoo.co.uk. It was in my junk folder and the number began with 070. I suspected the email straight away as it did not contain any role or any company name so I decided to type the number into my search engine and found this website. Thanks so much for this! The email contained this message:

    “Hi

As a result your application, I would like to invite you to attend an interview.

You will have an interview with the department manager, Edie Wilson. The interview will last about 30 min.

    • george bagan says:

hi I recieved it and like a fool was desperate for work so phoned it few times getting same message didn’t realise so now gonna end up with big mobile bill I won’t be able to afford, only got it yesterday 18/06/13 and must’ve called it like 6 times, no fool like an old fool but thanks for posting.
      George

      • admin says:

Contact your telephone provider and instigate a complaint. If they are half decent they will refund the costs incurred.

  32. Pat says:

    Hi All

I too received this email today and this is the fourth time in as many days, scum is a mild word for these people. But thanks to this site at least people will see them for what they are. I have reported this to the relevant authorities and hopefully something will come of it. Just a quick note most agencies are allowing your details to be seen by all as it is part of the small print and as with most decent people we have to do this if we want to get seen. Maybe the agencies should look at their protocols.

Again thanks for this site and maybe Messers. Brown and Co. will just go away.

    “Hi

  33. George says:

    Hi,

First of all, thank you for saving my money, my time and my peace of mind… :-D

I received mails twice… To understand the situation. I’m looking for a new job. I’m registered on one of largest jobsite. Unfortunaltelly I wrote other e-mail address during registration and inside of my uploaded CV.

I’m surprised, because I got “interview invitation” to both of my mail-boxes, but not third and fourth… Just to registered addresses… Hmmm…

    Best regards, George

  34. Samuel says:

Ive got a 28 pound phone bill because of falling for this, desperate for work so i called 7 times.. Im fuming.. Is there anything I can do?

  35. Samuel says:

Telco? Im on telco.co.uk being from england that what you mean?

  36. Wesley says:

This nonsense scam via Charles Brown is still happening. I got a email 2hrs ago, on my work computer. So be aware and let your friends, family and work colleagues know. Of this disgraceful and COY misleading fraud…..I am a busy man,who has no time for deception or theft of my time and hard earned money .

  37. Samuel says:

    Thanks :)

  38. jackson says:

WISHED I CAN GET HOLD OF CHARLES BROWN LET ME SLAP THE HELL OUT OF HIM OR HER.
OFCOME ALSO IS A SCAM ORGANISATION FOR ALLOWING CRAZY THINGS LIKE THIS HAPPENING

  39. Grace Whittaker says:

I fell for this also. I contacted Vodafone and they refunded the charges. I would urge everyone to do the same.

  40. Raj Sethi says:

Just fallen for this scam. Feel absolutely infurating. It’s hard enough trying to survive as well as look for work to have your cash swindled. The phone companies can do so much more to help in this matter than collude in allowing this to happen. At our cost! Not there’s. online agencies need to review there security and find out how they are able to extract our details. This reflects on them in a bad light when clients look to them for help and guidance.

  41. julie says:

Just fallen for this scam as well feel such a fool hard to believe it is still being allowed to go on
Thankfully my provider is sqaushing the charge

  42. Chris Brown says:

I got the message today with the number 07064848645, googled it and found the message. If I receive any e-mail I haven’t requested I googloe it. I was sent text messages once that Iwas charged for, managed to track them down and get my money back, it can be done!

  43. Georgia says:

I got an email with the 07064848648. Fortunately, I run out of battery and I did not call! It is indicated the name Charles brown. I guess it is also spam so don’t call it!

  44. Olegk says:

  45. Pam says:

Received an email today from Charlie Brown – same details as described above. Thankfully did not call as I was suspicious and found all your exchanges – thanks

  46. Brian says:

At it again but with a different number.

Just received the very same email as described above with this number: 07064848358.

Fortunately my spider senses kicked in to action as soon as I saw the email and I didn’t call the number. At least I’ve learned that 070 numbers are not mobiles now.

  47. G says:

Fairly obvious, the fact that the start of the email doesnt include your name (as you would expect) rang alarm bells for me. it was the lack of my name on the email that made me scrutinise it.

  48. Nick says:

    Hello

In regards to our previous email inviting you for a job interview. We realised we had a problem with our telephone line. Fortunately the vacancy is still open, we are still happy to invite you to an interview.

You will have an interview with the department manager, Edie Wilson. The interview will last about 30 min.

Please bring three reference (If available), as well as a copy of your ID, e.g. Passport, Driving License to the interview.

    Best regards

    Charles Brown

This is the reply i have just received after sending an email a few months ago complaining that i couldn’t get through on the phone.

I fell for it once when desperate for work but i am a little wiser now…… I think!!!!

  49. Marc says:

I received exactly the same email as Nick (5 August 2013). I have been unemployed for a year now and the thought that someone is trying to make money of my (and other people’s) hardship just goes to show what is wrong with the world today….money. People and corporations are only interested in money. And the more you have, the greedier you get!

  50. Trevor says:

Yes they are scum bags I too have received an email requesting that I ring to arrange an interview as I too am looking for work and expecting invitations to interview I rang but the message said it was not in service hung up; hope I don’t get charged. I also hope I find who disclosed my details to these fraudsters and scum of the earth!

  51. turn this into a positive – look at my comment that I have been looking for anyone who can generate clients for me. I will pay comission for fee paying work that results from your marketing efforts. See my website rwtm.pro for further details.

  53. Ash says:

As soom one who is jobless and actually looking for work it’s already frustrating as it is, especially in this economic environment. However, I was as suspicious of it when it was in my junk box, had no company name, job description or location on it. Even more so when I expect businesses to arrange interviews via phone as to make sure it’s all set up and verified.

Surely though, someone somewhere in Britain should know who this is, be it a phone company or directory services.

  54. Patrick Gibbons says:

I recieved a email asking me to contact them on 7064848370 in regards to a job interview i did realise it was a scam and the number is definitly high rate number but i thought i’d leave this reply anyway for unsuspecting victims.

  55. Chris says:

Just had this email myself and was suspicious of the number, glad I checked online before calling

  56. steve says:

    Many people have being receiving E-mails from a Charles Brown saying the following;

    “Hello
In regards to our previous email inviting you for a job interview. We realised we had a problem with our telephone line. Fortunately the vacancy is still open, we are still happy to invite you to an interview.
You will have an interview with the department manager, Edie Wilson. The interview will last about 30 min.

The Number is a premium Number 07064848367 (majority of premium numbers start in 070)

The computer he is using to send these E-mails is a HP-Compaq laptop, the IP address he is using is 198.154.208.23 which is the Identical IP address for a building in America
Address “11251 Northwest Freeway, Houston, Texas” (TX 77092)

I do believe he is actually using a company account to get access to all our data of job sites as he needs a company domain to access all our details (good example is if your cv is set to open so recruiters can see your CV) but can then use the details from any E-mail address. Technically he is committing a crime but he will not be prosecuted as there is no obvious evidence of who it is.

The company I believe this person is using is Charles brown law firm who strangely enough have the same IP address and same company address however this does not mean the firm is doing this, the person responsible can hack their IP address and pretend to be from the company or could be an old employee……

Either way be careful how you put your data on job websites. And never ring a number you don’t know without researching who it is first

This has been reported to the Police however from my experience of the police do not expect them to do anything as i doubt they have even started the investigation and if they have won’t have found out the information i have and i found it in an hour this morning..

    • Tyberos says:

I saw the texas IP 198.154.208.23 in the e-mail headers that you’re referring too. Not sure wher you got the compaq laptop from as SMTP headers don’t state the model of a computer, only the SMTP software used to transmit the email. You read e-mail headers from the bottom to the top up by the way. From my analysis it looks like he is connecting via an IP owned by the cellular provider 3 (three.co.uk, or threembb.co.uk) being a couple of their domains).

What this chap is doing is using a PAYG mobile device to route spam via a web hosting company in Texas and then on to whereever. This means he is untraceable as its easy to register a PAYG SIM under fake details, he could be sending spam while sitting on the back of a moving bus and you wouldn’t even know.

At most a lot of effort could be made by three to identify the MAC address of his mobile device by cross refrencing the times reported by the threembb.co.uk IP’s in the headers. Although all he’d need to do is get another cheap second hand phone from the market.

    Hi

I got a call today from an unknown number when I answered this scumbag asked if he was talking to a Mr W……….. When I replied yes he ended the call. Less than five minutes later I received an email Fortunately I never phoned this number because I was very suspicious. It is very annoying knowing that people can gain access to our private information so easily. Hope people on here find work very soon.
